Modular duplex magazines are utilized when an installation or military unit requires large capacity storage. This requirement may also stem from a need for large storage capacity in a small site footprint, where numerous stand alone magazines are not practical. Duplex magazines afford savings, as there is only one underground service requirement, a single pour pad and shared utilities. With added doors and front to back partition walls, an installation may have multiple user units utilizing the same magazine.

Two or more units are shipped to the site area and erected by means of a rigging process and bolted together, for a complete installation. Depth partition walls may be added to a unit to compartmentalize and segregate non-compatible materials or different military units utilizing the same duplex magazine.

Pre-engineered Magazines are a viable alternative to the high cost of new on-site construction or renovation requirements at an existing facility. Costs are usually reduced by one-half and these units are manufactured to government specifications.

Due to their versatility and construction features, Magazines may be located both indoors and outdoors. Magazines are available in ATF or Military specification offerings. Pre-engineered magazines are not considered relocatable buildings so they are exempt from OPNAVINST 11010.33 A.

When manufactured to Military Specifications, Magazines are built to the DOD NSWC 3046-93-1 specification requirements for the manufacture of wood lined, steel storage Magazines. Magazines manufactured to this specification serve as a stand alone high security storage facility for conventional ammunition and explosives. These facilities are for the storage of but not limited to fuses, detonators, small arms ammunition and pyrotechnics. These Units may also be used when existing facilities do not meet design criteria of Military Handbook (MIL - HDBK) 1013 / 1A, for the storage of Category II, III and IV arms. This specification also recognizes ATF 27CFR Part 55 for Type I and Type II bullet-resistant magazines with modifications to meet Navy AA&E physical security requirements (OPNAVINST 5530.13 A) and US Navy requirements (OP5).
