About Specialty Gears
Specialty gears are specialty or proprietary products and accessories related to gear types. Gears are mechanical devices that transmit motion and power between axes. Various types of specialty gears are metric gear, a spur gear, helical gear, bevel gear, miter gear, worm gears, and a hypoid gear. A metric gear is defined by a module, which designates the center-to-center distance between successive teeth. A spur gear is a straight-toothed gear with radial teeth that transmit power and motion between parallel axes. A helical gear transmits power and motion between parallel axes (opposite hand) or right-angle axes (same-hand). A bevel gear has conical faces that operate on intersecting axes. A miter gear is a bevel gear with a 1:1 ratio operating on right axes. A worm gear is a cylindrical gear with a spiral thread that drives mating worm wheels in high-reduction gear set applications. A worm gear operates on non-intersecting perpendicular axes. A hypoid gear has specially formed teeth on a circular face that are driven by a worm-like drive on non-intersecting axes. Other specialty gears are commonly available.
