About Lighting Fixtures and Lamp Sockets

Lighting fixtures and lamp sockets produce artificial light in industrial areas or workspaces, and mechanically hold and electrically connect lamp bulbs to wiring. Light fixture types include: ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, desk lamps, enclosure lights, flood lights, floor lamps, fluorescent lights, landscape lights, pendants, piano lamps, recessed lights, sconce fixtures, table lamps, torchieres, track lights, wall fixtures, and sockets or bare fixtures. Chandeliers are hanging, ceiling-mounted lighting fixtures and lamp sockets with multiple arms or lights. Desk lamps and table lamps are both used for task lighting. Enclosure lights are used to provide illumination within enclosures. Flood lights are used to light a location or object to a luminance that is considerably greater than its surroundings. Floor lamps or sticks are standing lamps used for general-purpose lighting. Piano lamps are tall, adjustable-height floor lamps. Torchieres are a type of standing lamp with a single, upward-facing glass shade and a three-way mogul bulb. Pendants or suspended luminaries hang from the ceiling, or from a cable or track system, by supports. Recessed lights include down lights and fluorescent troffers. Track lights mount on the ceiling and consist of metal rods and movable light fixtures that snap into place. Sconce fixtures are wall-mounted lighting fixtures. Lamp sockets are bare fixtures that provide an electrical connection and holder for a lamp or bulb, but do not include a shade, lens, or enclosure.
